the latest...
The past week I have been happy to host my friend Scott here from NYC....we met in New Mexico and he moved to New York the year before I did. He was a huge shoulder for me to lean on (and cry on too) during my time in the city. I last saw him in Nov. '06 when I was last in NYC, so it has been a long time coming to have some time to catch up with him. He is working on a fantastic personal photography project now, which is what brought him up to visit, and I cannot wait to see it come to fruition in the next year! It was great to see him!I shot a great beach portrait this past Wednesday, and as I thought to post a preview on this blog as I often do, I realized that the session is a surprise and I cannot post it! Bummer! We had such a great night for it with beautiful light, and I love many of the images. I will share them soon. Tom and I have a family wedding to enjoy tomorrow, so we are looking forward to a really fun weekend!Rebecca Brown PHOTOGRAPHER / Cape Cod Beach Portrait PhotographerLabels: BEACH, FRIENDSHIP, LIFE

CCMA gallery talk revisited
I figured that since the turnout for my gallery talk at the Cape Museum of Fine Art on Saturday was sparse, I would write out my notes here, in case anyone was interested in stopping in to the last two weeks of the show. The show comes down May 18th. As well, here is the link from my video on YouTube, as I could not get the actual video to post on my blog: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YBPzpmX79A8The video was shot by Steve Baty of All Media Pro at my opening reception on April 4th. It was very gracious and generous of Steve to do this for me, and I greatly appreciate his efforts on my behalf! So without further ado.....my notes on the CCMA gallery talk!"I have been back on the Cape for seven years, and have a photography studio in Yarmouthport. I am a Cape Cod native from Yarmouth. I was educated in New Mexico, at the University of New Mexico Fine Art Photography program, and then I moved to NYC. This work is from 1999 when I lived in New York. At the time, I lived in an artist's space in Queens with three motivated artists. This led me to create projects for myself. I went to Coney Island with a friend, and thought that it was a great landscape of people. I returned for several months that summer on the weekends to shoot images. The camera that I used was a Mamiya C3 twin reflex from the 60's. I wore it around my neck and looked down into it, as the images come up on the ground glass on the top of the camera. I would find compositions in the constantly changing and moving scene, and I would snap. Most of the time, people did not know that I was photographing them. Although, sometimes people would ask what what I was doing, and especially, in excited tones, if I was shooting for a magazine. I found that there were a lot of people who lingered at the boardwalk, waiting to be discovered. There were several folks, who once I admitted what I was up to, offered to perform for me, dancing, singing, roller skating even....the place was just ripe with a whole cast of characters!I chose b&w film for practical reasons, as I had a stockpile of it, but as well, when I shot color images there, they did not have the same feeling and appeal to me. As the series progressed, it felt almost magical to discover what I had captured. I had a conscious memory of many of the shots, but in shooting many snaps a day, to find that I got what I thought I had was so exciting. The interesting thing about my life then in relation to this project is that my day job was working for a top fashion photographer in Manhattan, but my life at home was so much closer to the people I photographed here. For one, I disliked the city life, and felt somewhat defeated by my life there. I was looking for a balance where I could be true to myself in my life and my photography work. It was a time when I had visual stimuli constantly flowing around me, yet had to go to the outer reaches of the city, to the quiet beach to find inspiration. Going to Coney Island was almost like a meditation for me as I looked into this camera all day and could be completely in my own head, not having to truly interact with anyone at all. Yet I came away with these amazing images of human relationships, all of these connections happening within one frame of film. I tried doing this same method of shooting in Times Square as well, but did not feel the same flow there, as I was just enveloped by the sheer mass of people. These images are pulled from a set of close to two hundred negatives. It was very interesting to discover the fact that I had so much repetition within the set. The same interactions and variables came up over and over again. For example, I could have pulled a series of "threes"--groups of three people--, or parents and children, or sets of twos. For this show, I edited the strongest images I felt were in the series as a whole. It was a wonderful discovery to bring the framed pieces to the Museum, which is the first time I have printed so many of them, and to observe how Michael Giaquinto, the Exhibitions Curator here, responded to them so enthusiastically. He made his decisions quickly about how they were to be hung, almost instantly finding connections within each piece, and relating each piece to the whole. It was great letting the work go to him and seeing how he envisioned the show on the wall.My current work tends to be more commercial portraiture, and I have not executed such a grand scale project in quite a while, so to have this work here is just a thrill, and I have been so pleased to have this opportunity to show this work publicly. I thank the Cape Cod Museum of Art for its support.I will now take any questions......... :)I hope this will motivate some of you who have not seen it to check out the show between now and May 18th! To those who already have, I thank you for your support!Rebecca Brown PHOTOGRAPHER / Cape Cod FINE ART PhotographerLabels: ART, ARTSY

CCMA Gallery Talk
This is a rather pathetic post as my gallery talk at the Cape Museum of Art was a bust on Saturday. But I did it, and have a picture, so it is worth a mention! I do think the reason was mainly because it was just pouring buckets outside and a miserable day weather wise. This very nice couple came though, and humored me as I read my notes to them. They had some great questions and I enjoyed speaking with them! Rebecca Brown PHOTOGRAPHER / Cape Cod FINE ART PhotographerLabels: ART, ARTSY, FINE ART BW

New Beauty Magazine editorial shoot
Yesterday I drove out to Westborough, MA to photograph this doctor for New Beauty Magazine, a national plastic surgery publication I work with. It is amazing to think of how tiny the room I had to work in was, as the shots came out great. It was a fun assignment! Rebecca Brown PHOTOGRAPHER / Cape Cod EDITORIAL PhotographerLabels: EDITORIAL

a great pedicure
I have to rave about the wonderful pedicure I had yesterday! It was the best one I have ever had I can honestly say. The best part was that it was free, because I won it!I won a raffle a few weeks ago with a certificate for the pedicure and a facial at the Newbury Street South Salon & Spa in South Harwich. I am having the facial on my birthday in a couple of weeks, and did the pedi yesterday.Laurie is the girl to go to there....she was great and my feet look fabulous. I especially liked her because she told me that I had "really great feet". I never knew! I suppose that since we are here on the Cod, she must work on a LOT of old lady feet, so it is all relative. :)Rebecca Brown PHOTOGRAPHER / Cape Cod Photographer with great feet apparently!Labels: LIFE
